The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) mentioned that only 57% of vehicles reported as stolen are recovered! In their information graph, “Vehicle Theft Prevention: What Consumers Should Know”, they listed reasons where auto-theft occurs the most and what is the reason behind it. According to their findings, more vehicles are stolen in states that are near the border! In a list titled “The top 10 U.S. cities with the highest auto theft rates”, six cities from California made a dishonorable mention. Although, unruly neighbors to the South are partially to be blamed, NHSTA believes the majority of the fault lies in careless drivers.
It was reported that nearly half of theft is caused by drivers who casually leave their keys in the ignition or leave their doors unlocked. NHTSA further warns drivers to take precaution. Drivers are advised to never leave valuables in their motor vehicle and should park in well-lit areas. If they have to step out, they should lock all doors, windows and have the key out of the ignition. While, their tips are just good common sense, many people overlook these steps! NHSTA reveals that a vehicle is stolen every 33 seconds!
